LiftOff: Strategic funding

First flight helps our members secure critical funding

Grants are a key source of non-dilutive funding for science-based startups. Unfortunately, the grant writing and application process is challenging and cumbersome. It requires a specialized skillset to navigate the process and submit competitive grants.

First Flight recognizes that our members are entrepreneurs and scientists first, that’s why we developed the LiftOff program to help with identifying and securing non-dilutive funding.

Through LiftOff, over $15 million in non-dilutive funding has been leveraged to help companies achieve early R&D milestones and de-risk their technology to be more attractive for follow-on funding and successful commercialization.” Eva R. First Flight developed the LiftOff program with the Eva Garland Consulting (EGC) firm. EGC has a team of Scientific Consultants that specialize in identifying and securing resources to support science-focused startups.  LiftOff provides customized strategies for obtaining non-dilutive grant funding through federal agencies including NIH, DoD, NSF, as well as other government and private non-dilutive funding sources.

More than $15 million in grants secured through liftoff since 2016

We don’t guarantee grant access, but we do need to brag about our success rate. In just two years the LiftOff program has helped our members secure more than $15 million in non-dilutive funding, and 100% of First Flight LiftOff participants have received grant funding within two and a half years.

FAST Program

Supporting women/minority owned, economically challenged, and rural-based science start ups.

In 2018, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Federal and State Technology (FAST) Partnership Program awarded First Flight with North Carolina’s only grant to conduct outreach across the state to increase the number of successful SBIR/STTR grant applications from companies in underserved communities.

Operating under the umbrella of our LiftOff program, First Flight provided FAST eligible companies with a subsidized strategic funding plan, grant-writing and proposal development support for a SBIR/STTR grant submission.

FIRST flight & FAST: reaching out to all of north carolina

During 2018-2019, First Flight worked in partnership with scientific consultant grant writers from Eva Garland Consulting, to create and host a series of education seminars geared to entrepreneurs in early stage companies, and “Train the Trainer” workshops designed for tech transfer, faculty, and members of the innovation ecosystem that support startups.

Outreach events were held across the state in eight locations, and six FAST eligible startup companies were selected for LiftOff with the development of strategic funding plans and SBIR/STTR grant submissions completed.

First Flight was pleased to be selected as the only FAST awardee in the state of North Carolina and has already submitted an application for 2019-20 with plans to continue efforts to increase the number of SBIR/STTR grants awarded to North Carolina companies through the LiftOff program and other collaborations.
